Dr. Arne Jaspers defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Identifying relevant load indicators for continuous monitoring in professional soccer’ in 2018. After his master studies (MSc. in Movement Sciences and MSc. in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy), he combined a position as sport scientist at football club AZ Alkmaar with his PhD research. During this research project he examined how load monitoring in professional football can be applied to optimize physical fitness and reduce injury risk. Currently he works as a sport scientist at the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) to support the Belgian national football teams. He is also a research associate at the University of Leuven focusing on athlete monitoring in team sports.
‘To measure is to know’ in perspective: the important interaction between (the eye of) the coach and data-informed decision-making
This presentation aims to give an overview of how evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence are combined to guide decision-making within a national team setting.
The current analytics flow will be explored with an open view on possibilities, challenges and current shortcomings, together with a discussion on the combination of (the eye of) the coach and data-informed decision-making from personal experiences as sport scientist and practioner.
